Autumn Oak Leaves in Bakelite Pin |
|---|
![]() I was going through my collection of materials one day, and I found this old piece of "Artificial Amber", which I had been told was a vintage by-product of the bead making industry. I decided to test it with some 'Scrubbing Bubbles'. The cotton swab turned orange! Next I did the hot pin test, it did not penetrate. Then, when I carved it, I smelled that 'Medicinal Smell'. There is no mistaking that smell! I enjoy carving this material, and the resistance to heat means that I can really polish it hard on the buffing wheel. ![]() This particular material is translucent amber, shot through with darker streaks. It was the perfect color for a cluster of Autumn oak leaves. ![]() ![]() This is a cluster of oak leaves, four all together, and it is carved in 360 degrees. ![]() The steel pin, with clutch, was wrapped into the design in such a way, that it holds itself in place without glue. I put a tiny dot of glue in, just for good measure, but I was able to push it through a hard felt, without holding the pin. ![]() ![]() ![]() Above is my signature mark, and below we can see the date. This piece was carved a few weeks ago, but I had to show it off on my felt hat for a while before I could offer it up.:) ![]() ![]() |
