I just finished carving this little beauty.
This is the first sew-through button I have carved in some time.

This lady appears to be swimming, or leaping through a backflip.

This is a lovely dark material, with no marbleing.
This button is just a little over 7/10ths of an inch in diameter,
and almost 2/10ths of an inch thick.

It is signed, and dated.

"But," you may be asking, "What is it made from?"
I don't know.
I performed some tests, and I did not find them to be conclusive,
so I will let you form your own opinion.
Please judge this button on it's artistic merits,
rather than it's material origins.

    Tests Performed

  • I tested it with Formula 409, and the paper towel changed to yellow.

  • I tested it under hot water for smell. I got no distinct aroma.

  • I performed a hot pin test.
The pin did not penetrate, but did produce a subtle aroma
which was not consistant with the strong, acrid scent of bakelite.

  • I burned some of it with a lighter. It did not ignite or burn on it's own.
If pressed, I would say that the scent is that of burning milk, but we know that scents are subjective.

  • The consistancy is not that of the vulcanized rubber which I use to make tobacco pipe bits.
I carved this button from the handle of an old Mirro-Matic "4" pressure cooker lid.
I have not been able to verify what sort of handle
was used on this particular cook pot.
Below is a picture of the piece of handle that I used.
As you can see,
this handle was cracked, and had not been used for some time.
I left the back of the button unpolished, so that you may test it.
It is the original outer surface of the handle.
If anyone has observations that they would like to contribute, please do.
I have been posting questions in various groups, to no avail.

Whatever it is made of, it is solid, durable, and dense.
It will be around for many years.
I make no claims as to what sort of material this is.
I will be starting a discussion entitled "Mystery Mirro Button",
on this item on the ebay group "Bakelite Besotted".
If you contribute helpful information which proves accurate,
I will offer free shipping on any one shipment for the next 3 months.
