Snowflake in Amber and Antler |
|---|
| I grew up in Michigan, although I live in Texas now, and I still miss the snow once in a while. ![]() This piece is a combination of Winter, in the snowflake, Autumn, in the color of the Real Chiapas Amber, and Spring, in the spring-shed Michigan White-tail antler, that I used for the body of the button. ![]() The amber used in this button is Guaranteed to be Real Chiapas Amber, which is around 30 to 40 million years old. I cut the amber 'lens' cabochon, with a stepped, mushroom-like shape, so that I could inset it into the antler. I then carved the snowflake into the reverse. Then I set a micro-thin wooden band around the step, and re-cut the whole assembly for the antler rosette. The wooden band is completely invisible, but it adds a nice contrast, and depth to the color of the amber. ![]() As you can see, the curved dome of amber creates an optical effect, which results in the snowflake being viewable from all angles. It also has a unique appearance of movement when the button is turned in the light. ![]() The base, as I said, is from the rosette, or burr at the base of the antler. This is the hardest, densest part of any antler and takes a high shine. ![]() This button is just over an inch in diameter, and about half an inch from top to bottom. This button is self-shanked. It is signed, B. Runfeldt and numbered #1 and dated 2006 It was completed yesterday, January 15th. It is the first piece that I am offering for sale this year. This button includes a decorative certificate of Authenticity. Each shipment will include a free mystery gift-with-purchase Which has an M.S.R.P. of over fifteen dollars! |
